I wanted to tell you about my General Conference Weekend - just like Brazilians do when they have free time, we went to the beach!
When I have always thought of beaches, I would think of lots of people in skimpy bathing suits on a crowded beach. And there are beaches like that in Brazil. But someone told me that Brazil has 1,000 miles of beach, and I believe it! There are all kinds of beaches - busy ones with lots of people running around, but also family beaches that have shade trees and even grass. There are also ones that are practically deserted and just beautiful. We saw some of each that weekend.
We went to Ubatuba and Paraty, two towns on the beach. At Ubatuba, we stayed at a lovely home about a quarter-mile from the beach. Everything was quiet and there were only a few families on an enormous beach while we were there.
Rain was anticipated the whole weekend, but we were blessed that it wound up only raining on Sunday. The other days were overcast, so it was perfect for me. I could be outside without getting sunburned or overheated.
We traveled for six hours on Thursday to get to Ubatuba from São Paulo, including stopping for lunch at a fazenda (farm-to-table restaurant) for lunch. The food was very good and it was fun to see a rabbit a hen, and her chicks among the tables!
On Friday, we went to several different beaches and finished the day in Paraty, with Italian food and gelato. I loved it! Paraty is a beach resort town, so it has more people, but a fun atmosphere. I loved seeing people out at night on the streets.
On Saturday, we found a quiet beach with a little restaurant and watched the first session of Conference there on our phones. We had earplugs so we weren't distracted by anyone. There was soft bossa nova playing, and it was so beautiful and relaxing!
We watched the second Saturday session at another beach and had a really good dinner afterwards. We were back at the beach house for the third Saturday session, but since we are three hours ahead, it was at 9 pm, so I watched it the next morning. ( The sessions were 1 pm, 5 pm, and 9 pm Brazil Time).
Sunday, we watched Conference at the house, then went for a quiet walk on the beach. A great way to end the day! On Monday morning, one of our medical advisors and I both had a Mission Health Council with one of the missions, and then we left to come back to São Paulo. At a MHC, we discuss the emotional and physical needs of the missionaries with the mission president and his wife. Those mission leaders are just wonderful - they are very loving towards their missionaries, even though the mission leaders are often spread thin, taking care of emergencies and late-night problems. I appreciate them so much!
After the MHC, we drove straight back, so I could make it in time for my English class at 4. Our medical couple also was teaching our missionary Family Home Evening at 5:30. We were a little sad to leave the beautiful beaches for city life.
I also wanted to share a wonderful day I had recently. The Aquilini family took me out for Italian food recently. It was so fun to be with them! I used to talk with Sister Aquilini all the time when we both were Pathway missionaries (and they were students at the same time!). Now, they are still students (in college) and he is now Bishop Aquilini! After lunch, we all got gelato. I just loved talking and laughing with them!
My next blog is going to be about all the wonderful Brazilians who bless my life. When I talk to missionaries who served in Brazil and ask them what they miss the most, the answer is normally not the mangoes (which are incredible!) or Braziian Cheese Bread (Pão de Queijo) which is delicious. The number one answer is the Braziians and how wonderful and loving they are. So, watch for the next blog!

Aquilinis and self-kindness

Your comment about self-kindness reminds me of a comment given to me by one of the sisters we minister to. She said we tell ourselves how poorly we have done something; how we don't dress well or look good enough, etc. But if someone else was saying the same type of thing, we'd say that person was doing a good job. He/she shouldn't be so hard on himself/herself. We need to tell ourselves the same ng. "Don't be so hard on yourself. As long as you keep trying, that is important. Heavenly Father wants us to just keep trying."

I must say, even though we drove through the mountains to see all the beautiful fall colors during one of the sessions, your views win! What a nice, relaxing weekend.

It was so fun to spend some time with you!!!!! I just wish we had better wether that day so we could spend some time outside, but going to the Italian Restaurant and getting the gelato after was still such a good way to have time with you!
